WHAT IS RED LIGHT THERAPY?

Red light therapy (RLT) is an FDA cleared, groundbreaking technology used by dermatologists to support the skin’s natural healing processes and is a popular treatment to reverse signs of skin aging. It aims to solve skin issues by using low wavelength red light. Many experts believe that it can help with problems such as skin conditions, scarring and signs of aging — including wrinkles, age spots and so much more.

HOW?

For every cell in your body, the source of energy that keeps everything going is called ATP or Adenosine Triphosphate. When your body absorbs particular wavelengths of light energy, it converts that energy to produce more ATP, thus boosting the body’s natural ability to regain and maintain vitality. The resulting elevation of ATP is then used to up-regulate cellular performance and repair tissue damage. RLT stimulates the mitochondria which are the little powerhouses in our cells to generate more ATP production.

Fact: The cell cannot survive without ATP.
As the cells have more energy, the body has more energy to function properly.

Red Light also improves blood flow which brings oxygen. Oxygen = life. Exposure excites the cells at different levels to help stimulate blood circulation and the production of collagen and elastin. It also helps lessen redness, repair damaged cells and speed up healing of inflamed skin.

Denmark, 1892, Dr Niels Ryberg Finsen reported the successful use of red light to prevent scar formation from smallpox.

He was honoured with a Nobel Prize in 1903 for his pioneering work with light therapy when he had successfully healed tubercular skin lesions (lupus vulgaris) with ultraviolet light.

HOW TO PREPARE

Clean, exfoliated skin is ideal. Certain ingredients in some skin care products and makeup can inhibit the absorption of the light into the skin, lessening the effectiveness of the treatment. Special skin-care products are available for red light which complement and intensify your results. Just ask!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE RED LIGHT THERAPY?

For effective results, it is necessary that you use Red Light Therapy 3-5 times per week for the first 4 weeks, then 2-3 times per week for the following 4-12, and then 1-2 times per week after that to maintain results.

Red Light Therapy isn’t a one-time treatment for skin conditions and like anything worthwhile, results are not instant. Some things take persistence, commitment and effort. From weight-loss and getting in shape, to saving money or breaking a bad habit, there are many activities that don’t have immediate results and can therefore be discouraging to many people. This is particularly true in our current era of immediate gratification, where you can get your online delivery in a day and everyone is looking for the next “hack” or shortcut to make everything easier.

No two people are alike; everyone has unique health needs and responds differently to treatments. With that in mind, your optimal red light dosage depends on the condition(s) you want to treat, your overall health, and your light sensitivity.

CAN I TAN OR SPRAY TAN ON THE SAME DAY?

Absolutely. Our advice is to begin with the Red Light Treatment. Then, if you like, tan and then spray tan after that. We’ll provide you with a big, fluffy bathrobe to wear from room to room. Hybrid lotions specifically designed for multi-service sessions are always available.

CAN I WEAR MY TANNING LOTION IN THE RED LIGHT THERAPY BOOTH?

Some tanning lotions are hybrids and are designed for both tanning AND red light therapy. Most, however, are not and would block the skin’s ability to absorb red light. There is also a whole line of lotions, serums and creams dedicated to red light. Staff can help you make informed decisions.

CAN I WEAR MAKEUP DURING MY SESSION?

Yes and no. Ideally you should remove make-up and cosmetics before exposure to red light. Some ingredients such as silicones, oils or bronzers can block the pores and prevent the skin from breathing, and may therefore cancel out the positive effects of the red light treatment.

Sunblock should NEVER be used. There are some special skin-care products for red light treatments which complement and intensify its action. Ask staff for details.

HOW LONG IS MY SESSION?

At Tropical Sunsations, our Red Light Therapy booth is 11 minutes.

ARE THERE NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS TO RLT?

No. Red light therapy is non-invasive, painless, requires no recovery time and can be used on all skin types and tones. This therapy is not toxic like some harsh topical skin treatments.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR DURING MY TREATMENT?

Nothing, if you like. The more skin exposed during your session, the better. You can also wear your underwear or a bathing suit if it makes you feel more comfortable.

IS IT VERY WARM? WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

The lights themselves become only slightly warm; it isn’t uncomfortable and you can adjust the fans. However your circulation increases throughout the treatment, so you may experience a feeling of warmth from that. A quick energy boost or feeling of euphoria is also possible.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY SESSION?

Hydrate! Water is essential for cellular processes and your cells will be hard at work after your red light treatment. Make sure to drink extra water and eat well so your cells have all the fuel they need to heal. This is exactly why we provide you with a bottle of water whenever you do a red light session.

Moisturize! If you are not going to tan or spray tan after your red light session, apply an appropriate moisturizer to maintain and extend the benefits of red light therapy.
